Cost of Studying in the US

Now that you know the benefits of studying in the US here are the costs of studying in the US.

The annual costs of studying in the US can get up to five figures, however, this can vary, and some factors like the course of study and the state in which the school is located. There are multiple types of institutions available in the US such as community colleges, private colleges, and public colleges. Most international students study at public and private colleges rather than community colleges.

The cost of fees depends on the type of college you attend – public or private. The educational cost of a private university is way higher and more expensive than the educational cost of a public university. This is because most private colleges do not have a standardized government fee system. In order to cover tuition fees, you will need approximately $10,000 to $55,000 a year (indicative).

Aside from the tuition fees, there are other fees that students will be expected to pay.

Health Insurance

Health insurance covers the health fees that may be incurred from accidents or other medical needs by students. The expected fees to pay by students are $30-$140 for health insurance per month depending on the college and the health insurance package. Without health insurance, international students can not apply to US colleges.

Accommodation Costs

Most colleges have dorm rooms where students can stay, the school provides accommodation for these students and they provide basic amenities like light and water for the students in the dorm room. Students are however asked to pay between $5000-$8000 per year, this fee largely depends on the school as the fee varies.

On the other hand, students may decide not to stay in the dorm rooms and rent an apartment around the school, they will however be paying for the electricity and water that they use. This is more expensive as students who choose this route on average pay $6,000-$15,000 per year – depending on the apartment and location.

Student Visa

Applying for a student visa to study in the US is another kettle of fish altogether. Every student whose intention is to study in the US must have a student visa. As an international student, you have to apply and get accepted by a Student and Visitor Exchange Program (SEVP) certified college.

Visa applicants have to pay a non-refundable fee. All students are categorized as F, M, or J, depending on their courses, merit, and colleges. They have to pay $350 as a SEVP fee and a visa application fee of $160.

It is estimated that it would be averaging around $10,000-$12,000 per year for international students. The cost might vary depending on your location of residence.

Transportation Costs

The transportation costs mostly affect students who will not be staying in campus dormitories. Students who are on campus dormitories will not have to bother about transportation as their location is quite a walkable distance. This makes it challenging for students who stay outside the campus as they have to consider transportation costs as well.

Luckily, there are various means of transportation in the US and all modes of transportation are moderately fair so students may not have to spend so much. These modes of transportation are; Trains, Cabs, and buses. Rental facilities are also available to students for usage.
